I need to fix a security light about 30ft from it's indoor outlet socket. I will run the cable under as much protection as possible, ie. window cills, soffits etc. and it will not be touching the ground at any point. My question is : do I need a special exterior cable or can I use standard PVC cable ?

If you are running it from a socket via a standard BS1363 plug fitted with an appropriate (3A) fuse, then you don't HAVE to do any more than use normal flex. There are different qualities of sheathing so you could find a better quality one to do the job. If you are running it as a spur off the ring main, then use standard 1mm (or 1.5mm) squared grey cable, tacked on using the proper cable clips..
