You'll have the PVC coupling with a gasket inside that fits against the metal pipe with a large exterior nut that squeezes down on the gasket fitting against the metal pipe as it's tightened....
If, however it's the other way around with the metal pipe having the compression nut and gasket, then it's likely not to fit and not leak...
