replace glass

I need to replace a glass panel in my door. I have bought the new piece and now I need to know how to do it. Is it easy to do or should I get a glazier to do it?

It depends upon your definition of 'easy'. It's not as simple as, say, changing a light switch, but a great deal easier than installing a bathroom suite!

Get yourself some safety specs and gloves...
First of all you have to remove the wooden bead that holds the glass in place...prise it off with a chisel or strong knife.
Them remove the broken glass from all round the frame...
Followed by the dried putty...all of it...
When your frame is cleaned...then measure the frame height and width...
The glazier will cut it for you...about 3mm smaller than the opening...
Insert a strip of putty all round the frame...then place the glass down on the bottom edge of the rebate in the putty.
Gradually apply pressure all round the edges of the glass forcing the putty to come out of the front of the glass...
Hammer in 4 pins to help retain the glass whilst fixing...
Then re-fit your beads again applying pressure against the glass...hammer in some pins to fix the beads...
Get your knife and trim off the excess putty..

When you hammer the pins in to fix the beads, do it with the hammer head sliding across the glass or you`ll end up smashing the glass

If the glass is not flat put some putty between glass & beading and trim off excess.

Don't forget!! If the glass is low down, it needs to be toughened glass, ie safety glass - and by common sense, really. Also, as with many jobs, it's the finishing touches that really matter; smoothing off the putty is quite an art
