is it possible to screed over a timber floor prior to laying carpet?

i have knocked through 2 rooms into one with differing floor levels, is it possible to screed over the existing timber floor to level it prior laying carpet over?

No. Use ply overlay screwed down to the existing floor. Thin layers will provide minor levelling. Screed will crack over time
Depending on the difference in levels, you may want to put battens in place. Space these at 300mm centres and use 18mm or 22mm ply on top. Don't forget cross-battens where ply sheet edges will meet.

I'd do it the way the others are suggesting, as well. You could then use a self-levelling component to smooth out minor differences.
Feet are very sensitive to changes in level so you really need to design for a very gentle slope that changes the level between the 2 rooms.
