Solvents for glue

I\'ve just finished staining some French windows and I put in masking tape on the individual panes to stop splashes. Unfortunately - due to an injury - the masking tape was up for quite a while before I did the staining and now the glue has set hard.

Any ideas on the best (easily available) solvents to get rid of the marks?

Just before you start using any solvents which could harm the staining you applied, try giving the glue a coat of Cooking oil and leave it for 24 or 36 hours. I have found that Cooking oil attacks and softens quite a few glues and adhesives, particularly those sticky labels you find on plastic products, etc., without harming the plastic so It certainly won't harm the glass window, but keep it off the staining. (just in case!!!)
Certainly worth a try if you have the time to spare?

Different manufacturers use different adhesives on their masking tapes, which means that different solvents would normally be needed to remove them. Wak's method is often recommended. Alternatively, you could use ''Sticky Stuff Remover'', available from Lakeland, or, at a lower price, from many discount corner stores. It will work on all the adhesives without harming your stain.

If all else fails, go to a chemist and try and get hold of a product called "ZOFF". It is used in hospitals for removing adhesive dressings and is available to the public in small sachets, like finger wipes, but can also comes in small bottles. It works wonders. Good luck

Hi Charlie Try methylated spirits cheap enough @ B.Q wear rubber gloves apply meths via a lint free cloth onto sticky area only to avoid spillage onto pre stained wood HTH Tez

WD40 is also pretty good for removing sticky residue, i have used it in the past and it has worked for me.
