Recommend white paint to cover medium colour painted walls
7 Answers
Hello, I\'m decorating, I\'ve painted white over a pale pink wall. I\'ve used Dulux basecoat using a roller, then a brush and then a paint pad. I then used Wickes one coat in white. The problem with these paints are they are so thick, difficult to paint with and don\'t give a good finish. I normally use a paint pad because they are easy to work with and give a good finish.
The next room I have to do is lilac/mauve colour which is darker than the pale pink and again it is going to be white.
Can anyone recommend a paint that they\'ve used to cover a darker colour that they think was easy to use and gave a good finish
Many Thanks
Nicky

Hi Nicky, when you put on the paint is it drying out very fast. If it is you need to put a bit of water in with the first coat so that it goes on easier and doesn't dry out as quickly. I wouldn't use a one coat paint as in my opinion they very rarely do the job in one coat especially if you are trying to cover up a darker or much lighter colour. I just don't like them and prefer the proper system of using a mist coat followed by usually 2 other coats. If you get say Dulux vinyl matt and give the walls a mist coat ie. first coat watered down by about 25% followed by 2 good coats as it comes out of the tin then you should find it covers quite well. Good luck
Thank You Shedman for your idea, the reason I was using Wickes one coat is it was washable, I looked at their washable/endurance paint but it wasn't available in White. I thought the Dulux basecoat would cover the pink paint.
Your idea sounds alot easier and I might try this but can you wash the walls with normal paint or water down washable/endurance paint

Hi Nicky, yes you should be able to water down all Dulux vinyl paint. The endurance range is supposed to be a lot stronger ie, longer lasting and more washable than the normal range. I have used the normal Dulux many times and always found that to be fine and washable. The idea of putting on a mist coat is to take the suction out of the walls so that they do not dry out too quickly causing you to have difficulty putting the paint on. If you can't find the colour you want in most of the Dulux range you can go to your local B&Q and they will mix it for you.
