Thinning Hammerite paint

I am going to paint the fibreglass lid of my old Suzuki Jeep with Hammerite. Years ago I was told that using Hammerite Thinners (to thin and clean brushes) was unnecessarily expensive and that I could use ".............." Problem is, I've forgotten what that ".........." is! I don't think it was cellulose thinners or white spirit but it might have been meths. Sadly the car shop is long gone.
Does anyone out there know for sure, please?

Hi, whenever I have used Hammerite I always use cheap brushes then dump them after use. It's a lot cheaper and quicker than trying to clean them out.

Hammerite plus anything but the proper thinners equals congealed mess and wrecked brushes in my experience, I am also a believer in the throwaway brush method

I can vouch for that rowan, we used hammerite a couple of weeks ago and did the cheapstake thinners option - rubbish effect and brushes in the bin. I have bought the proper thinners to finish the job.

Standard Thinners is absolutely fine.
Get it from a Car Paint suppliers (by the gallon)
Or ask for some brushwash in a jamjar from a car repainters.

People have been conned for years with this "Hammerite Thinners" bull**it.

Cheapskate Brushwash/Cleaner .. No good.
