We have taken a gas fire out and reopened the fireplace. Since we did this we have noticed what looks like damp on the chimney breast. The house was empty for about 18 months before we moved in. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing it please. Thanks in advance

it could be the flashings round the stack on the roof.
18 months is a long time Rhino ........... especially through last winter. Let it breathe for a while before you get too concerned.

thankyou. i did wonder if it was because it was empty for so long
Internal chimney, or externally built (as addition to wall)?
Most likely a ventilation (or lack of) issue.
