I have a pine chest which I am struggling to find space for in my house. I could do with some storage in my garden and am debating putting it outside. What is the best way I can 'waterproof' it.I know it won't last forever. Would exterior paint work..any ideas. Thanks for any replies.

Hi Woofgang,thankyou.Off to Google that,cheers.
Use stain rather than paint or varnish - then you can recoat it. I would use something like this

Or just a wood preserver
.......... as Woofter and Tony have said barb ....................

i would also suggest soaking olive oil into it befire painting, to repel the water and prevent it soaking through any gaps
Has it been assembled with waterproof glue?..if not you may find a pile of firewood one morning!!

Thanks very much everyone.I have loads to go at now.No Bright Spark,I doubt it's waterproof glue..it's really old. I just really want to preserve it as long as I can. I'm not really expecting it to be around forever. It's well made though with dovetail joints too so hopefully it'll still be here next year! Thanks again.
TBH .. Modern open grain fast-grown pine will last all of 5 minutes outside, whatever you treat it with.
Only chance is soaking with preserver .. regularly.
Nail on a bituman skin on the lid and stand on bricks to keep off damp.
The best exterior paint I've come across is Butinox No 2 opaque white oil based wood stain. Did my windows with it 8 years ago, and they still look like they were done yesterday. (Ever used it, Builder? Not cheap, but super quality stuff). Do remember that you'd have to cover every millimetre of the chest, inside and out.
Personally I don't see it working, I think it will swell with the rain and dry out and fall to bits with the sun.
