Can anyone tell me what this strange thing that I found in my garden yesterday is please.

have you put bark on your garden recently, they are a woodland species and often get into gardens via bags of bark

I did put some bark down some time ago, about two years I think so thats probably where it came from then. Having read a bit more about it I'm very tempted to eat it but haven't decided yet.
Perhaps you could try it on your OH?

if you decide to eat it ( and I would) it needs to be cooked for a long time to avoid gastric upsets,,, so chopped up small in a soup or casserole is good...

looks like a morel fungus and they are edible. usually grow within the vicinity of beach leaves or mulching
