Growing herbs

Hi, I'm a bit of a novice so please bear with me on this, as I'm probably being extremely dim! I really want to grow a good selection of herbs this year. I have a lovely bed in the garden where I already have a well established sage plant and smaller thyme and rosemary plants. I have now also planted parsley and basil, and was wondering if these will also grow into nice big bushes if planted in the ground, as when I've tried to grow in pots they just seem to grow enough for a couple of uses then don't replenish?

Our basil and Italian Thyme and two varieties of oregano grow to such huge sizes in the open garden that we have to literally dig up part of the plant to keep it from encroaching on nearby vegertables. They do need lots of sun...

I can't get parsley to grow in my garden for love nor money, somebody told me you have to ask the devil to grow it! Plants such as mints are best kept in big tubs else they'll spread like wildfire. Basil I grow in pots in the greenhouse, it keeps the blackfly away from the tomatoes. The 'woodier' herbs such as thyme, marjoram (oregano) and rosemary should grow into nice bushy plants, if you want it to grow up pinch out the sides, and vice-versa.
