We grow runner beans in wigwam shapes in very large pots every year. This year they are very slow (maybe due to the weather?) we are getting some beans now but a lot are hidden by masses of foliage. Is it best to cut some of the leaves off so the sun can get to them, the same way as you do with tomatoes?

Absolutely.
I would, but I would also make sure to water them a lot - beans are greedy for water.
