We intend to put it by the front door so visitors, postman , door to door salesman (no not them really), notice the pleasing fragrance as they go to our door.

Philadelphus (mock orange) is a fabulous smelling flowering shrub, I keep meaning to get a couple for the patio, so I can sit and sniff when we eventually get some decent weather.
I'm with snags. You may even get more visitors
A beautiful scented bush which flowers early Spring is Daphne. Honeysuckle is powerful too which flowers late Spring. For summer you could go for a rose bush.
if you are planting directly into the soil rather than a container try a triple planting of winter honeysuckle (lonicera fragrantissima) it is shrubby rather than a climber so it will give a support structure for a scented climbing rose Guinee is lovely a dark plummy red with heady fragrance or Zeph Drou as than the normal one)
Most shrubs only flower for a month so you might want to think of something to underplant it with.

I would suggest one of the mock oranges (philadelphus....coronarious, microphullus, belle etois, avalance) and underplant with stocks, blue petunias and marigolds.

I grow Trachelospermum jasminoides on our front wall and it smells devine all summer.
Daphne odora, lovely and very strong smelling plant, we have one growing in the garden centre where i work and you can smell it from over 20ft away.
