Courgettes

Has anybody grown courgettes this year? I have had quite a lot but found something is eating one or two, possibly slugs so I`m trying out something i.e.: Enclosed each one still growing with a thin plastic bag and with an elastic band lightly at the end. I`m checking daily and moving the bag down slightly to allow for growth. It looks funny but hoping the culprit won`t like the taste of a plastic bag!
