Hi I am moving house shortly, I am not a cheap skate but I have a beautifull Rose with a lovely scent, my late husband planted and tended it with care, my question is can I dig it up and replant in to my new garden, if so what is the best way to keep it safe untill ready to replant. Happy new year to all AB's WHF
i would dig it up while dormant and repot into a decent size pot with a handful of bonemeal mixed into compost....prune early spring and water well...put some broken pots or grit in bottom to help drainage....then simply replant again with a bit of feed such as bonemeal...
It may not be possible to re-pot in a pot, (depending on the size of the rootball). If the rootball is large follow murraymints advice but wrap it in a hessian sack, keep moist and in a frost free environment, then replant in well prepared area allowing enough room to spread roots out. Water the prepared hole before replanting.
As Murraymints says but be careful where you plant it. Roses don't like to be planted where roses have been before - they can contract "rose sickness" and may die. We've tried replacing a few roses in our garden with little success.
There is a substance out called rootgrow:
We've just replaced 4 roses and used this in the planting. It gets good reviews but it's too early for me to comment on it.
The best thing is to plant your rose where roses haven't been grown before in a situation like yours where the sentimental value exceeds the monetary value of the rose.
Thankyou all so very much for your replies and yes bhg481 it has sentimental memories it is bad enough leaving our home so I really do want to keep this rose, thankyou again WHF
