As Catso says, cut it when, or before, it gets too long.
If youre using an electric mower, use an rcb as the grass can be wet this time of year

Circuit-Breaker is easier!
I'm doing an RHS course, and with current climate, most people's grass needs doing all year round, even if only once a month on a high setting - I've cut mine between Christmas and New Year the last two winters. If you've got a grass-box, its an easy way to collect the fallen leaves too! If you can find a patch of 2-3 dry days, you'll churn the grass up less.

lol Zac & what about the JCD, compact digger?
Just a quick tip what..the......if you want to mow but the grass is wet/dewy just lightly brush it over which will flick off the water droplets & break up worm casts (bit tedious I know). Then go in & have a cuppa & when you go back out it'll be dry & will mow a lot better.
Enjoy your new garden, it can be addictive though!
