That depends where you are, different estates, Councils etc have different rules, some private houses have no rules!!!
2 metres from 2 metres from the kerb................. 1 metre high from the kerb.
Sorry Rugeleyboy, but that is so wrong!! however it may be applicable for the fences at your house! At my house for instance, we have no kerbs, we legally have trees, hedges and fences over 2 meters!!

ratter............. i am a fencing contractor and have recently done a fence where the client wanted a 2 m high fence on his front garden, i advised him that it had to be only 1m high on the front lawn and he gave me a letter from the council staiting that "my above post"
upto 6ft, above this isnt reccomended for stability purposes,
