How do i kill off my grass?

I want to get rid of my grass and replace it with slate or gravel. Do I need to kill of the grass before i put meshing down. Or can the meshing go striaght over the grass.
I hope someone out there can help me please.

I think you can put the meshing straight onto the grass. We used black stuff wouldn't say it was meshing but it went straight on to the grass.
