what the best things to plant to absorb the noise of a busy road

Hi weas,
personally I think holly takes a lot of beating, it makes a good thick hedge which will muffle traffic noise trap pollution and fumes and it's evergreen so it will be effective all year round.

If you have plenty of space, a conifer hedge can make a tall screen, I'd go for thuja plicata or dare I say it cupressocyparis leylandii if neighbours are'nt an issue.
