Is there anything I can use which speeds up the breakdown?

I am not a gardner in any sense, so I really don't know.

you can use an activator which speeds up the process. You can buy Garrota powder or use seaweed, nettles, urine (diluted), fish blood and bone, sulphate of amonia both at a sprinkle per layer.

Also make sure it is kept moist and warm.

Seriously, having a wizz in your compost bin is just as good as anything you can buy.

Go on - give it a go.....

But watch those flies!!! :O)
'Golden showers' are free & will do the job! What you are really doing is adding nitrogen to speed up the break down process. Fresh WET straw stable 'mucking-out's may be more acceptable than making the family use a bucket & avoids the possibility of drowning the heap.
The dilution of urine to add to your heap must be 7 parts water to 1 part urine for the best results otherwise the smell buids up. Sprinkle this over heap every 6 inches of waste but soiless compost.
