This will suppress many weeds but if you have many dandelions you would want to spray them asap before sowing and then sow the seed immediately after. NEVER spray grass with weed killer as previously stated or you will surely kill the grass also, and never do it on a windy day as it will kill small plants if it touches them. (Sorry derrynoose)
Spray the ground with Roundup BEFORE you cultivate. This will kill pereniel weeds and give you a good strart. You can not avoid seedlings appearing with the grass, but regular mowing will kill most of them off anyway. When the grass is established(3-4 months), you will be able to use a SELECTIVE weedkiller that is suitable for lawns. Sorry Shylock dont like the membrane idea - I can imagine unearthing it t a few years later with my rotavator!
Thank you Shylock73 for your polite reference to my advice!
I certainly wouldn't use general weedkiller (nor did I recommend its use earlier! ) except where I want to kill grass and weeds simultaneously.
I use M.S.S. 2,4 D Esler or other selective herbicide regularly to kill weeds ( but not grass!) in established lawn.
