Lawn?

Hiya

I have a buzzing concrete garden and with 2 little boys it's a nightmare. Does anyone know if I am able to put top soil on top of the concrete and then turf? If so how many inches of top soil would I need? If not, any suggestions on how to make it a bit more child friendly and still look like a garden!

Contrary to what a lot of builders seem to believe, covering concrete with soil is a no, no!! Artificial grass, would be perfect, providing the concrete is reasonably flat. You could also box round the concrete with timber and place 3inches or so of play bark or the cheaper wood chips - check to make sure there is water run off.

I sympathise, but really don't think that would work. You'd always have the problem of drying out and the turf dislodging from the base especially with kids giving it a hammering.

Short of getting rid of the concrete & starting again, I think playbark or fake turf are your options.

We put a lawn in our back yard on top of concrete last year and its fine! we built a raised area out of railway sleepers, filled this with top soil (about 5-6" deep) and laid the turf on top.

I have a friend who is a greenkeeper and he reckoned you only need and inch or so of soil to grow grass as long as you keep it watered and it can drain ok. So maybe put some gravel down before the top soil then the turf
