Fatsia is nice all year round and i love some of the taller grasses such as miscanths zebrinus which are lovely in summer then the dead leaves and seed heads hang around all winter giving some lovely movement in the wind.
Mahonia and sarcococca will give some winter scent and are evergreen and there's a massive selection of conifers for every occasion..
