busy lizzies are growing very poorly lots of tiny leaves and 1 or 2 spindly stems per plant is it nitrogen deficiency or another problem ,,,any help appreciated

I have excellent ``Busy`s` in hanging baskets growing in a peat free compost with added granular feed and water retaining crystals sprinkled in the mix when making it up. All you have to do then is water regularly sometimes 2-3 times a day, but not in hot sunshine, better to submerge pot or basket in a large container until bubbles stop rising through the compost.
