if you have a blue one then it will prefer a slightly acidic soil to keep the blue colour. If you have any other colour then there is no requirement for this and any soil type will do.
I find Hydrangea`s do very much better in acidic soil and in a damp slightly shaded position. Never let them get too dry at the roots and feed with ericaceous liquid after flowering. Leave old flowers on to protect against frost over the winter months.
I was always told to feed the soil with iron to keep them blue or they begin to turn purple, then pink!
Yes Alec, if you sprinkle sulphate of iron around the stem this will turn them a nice blue eventually, but keep it off the leaves.
