The Male flowers have a thin stalk behind them the females have a swollen area just behind the flower.

Next time get all female variety, much easier

thank you emertitus, someone gave it to me so didn't have a choice. will do as you say if I decide to grow any next year.
But... but, you shouldn't pick off the male flowers since they are essential for pollinization of the female flowers to produce the cucumbers...
Question Author
do I not take off any then?
Cucumbers have male and female blooms and for the fruit to it has to be cross pollinated which is usually done by bees.
But you can hand pollinate them with a Q tip or fine paintbrush .Pick up the pollen off the male anthers and rub it against the stamen on the female .Once they start to fruit you can then pick of the male blooms .
