Hi there

My daughter is 2 and likes trying to help out around the garden etc. We've just fenced off some of the garden to make into her 'own' little garden and I wanted to put some large tubs there in which she can help to grow fruit or veg (and hopefully eat them too!).

Can anybody recommend any hardy fruit/veg plants that would be suitable for this? It's usually shady in the morning but the sun is on this spot in the afternoon and evening. And it doesn't matter if they won't produce anything this year, it will be something to work towards for next year hopefully :o)

Thought I posted this yesterday, maybe I didn't press submit or something... d'oh!

I think it is a bit late for anything of use but you could plant some spring bulbs so that she sees things coming up later.

Depending on the size of pots I would grow things like carrots, radish, spring onions and beatroot and lettus and of course the obligatory sunflower. If you can they like chives as it looks like grass and it keeps going. My (now) 5 yr old fetches Rosemary from the bush daily , whether I need it or not.
Like cassa says, a bit late for this year, though you could still try Swiss Chard, the rainbow variety is very appealling to children. But next spring i would try cherry tomatoes in tubs, the best variety is Tumbling Tom. Strawberries are great if you are prepared to fight off the slugs. Good luck.
