Hi, I planted a 2 year old Silver Birch tree about 18 months ago and shortly afterwards accidentally damaged about 40% of bark circumference, at the base, with a lawn strimmer. It is a little under 6 feet high but only about the top 3rd has any green growth. The lower branches are just that... bare branches. Has it had its day, or will the lower branches recover? Thanks.

well it just goes to show how getting drunk, having an argument with your wife and getting out the hedge trimmer to attack her favorite tree goes. maybe stay off the booze?

I thought this site was for people to exchange knowledge, not get heckled for asking a question. I don't appreciate your reply monkeywiener. If you want to shout out nonsense then try your local comedy club.
Any sensible replies from other users would be appreciated. Thanks.
gees man only kidding....... the serious answers wil follow....
Calm down Fruitmuncher - here's a serious answer! Your tree is brighter than you think. You've damaged 40% of its trunk, thereby reducing it's sap supply to the branches, so it shuts a few down so that it can keep itself alive! Your tree will take stock during the winter, begin to heal the wound and hopefully recover, it maybe a little stunted, but you owe one, so treat it with loving care!

Thank you very much landscaper2. This was just the kind of advice I was after. I was worried that I would have to replace the tree altogether. Sorry if I over reacted to the earlier comment by another user, I guess I had a sense of humour failure. Thanks again.
