Wait until March/April before even attempting to perform the task. Frost is a killer and is almost certain to lead to catastrophic consequences, besides which I am doubteful if you would be able to obtain turf from any stockist at this time of year.
I wouldn't risk it either. Even if you find a supplier it will probably be expensive & you'd really need to lay it asap after delivery - a bit difficult if it happens to snow!
You could lay either astroturf or shingle and gravel, both look good enough to sell a house and the new owners can change it or not as they like.
It's a good time to lay turf but dont water (could ice up). It will bond well to the damp undersoil. Keep off the grass, when frosty, so as not to damage it.
Hi kira - I would avoid laying turf at this time of year too.

We've successfully laid turf in April/May & Sept/Oct.

Thanks for all your answers.

Not that keen on gravel/shingle gardens.. i guess we could consider artificial grass.

Has anyone else had it? Does it look OK? Would buyers be put off by it?

Thoughts?

Artificial grass might look good at first sight, but it does not last. It is highly expensive and still requires a high degree of maintenance, is susceptible to becoming torn and then looks ugly.
as long asyou have good drainage and you are prepared to cover the lawn with flease or 2 layers of weed membraine if a frost is due you could get away with it.
it goes without saying its not the best time of year but an english winter is an odd thing if the temp. is above 6c it will grow, slowly but it will grow if it was me it would depend on the size of the lawn and how bad the old one was.
if you decide to lay it ,do not walk on it, do not let the children play on it and keep pets off. good luck
