We, unfortunately, live next door to a very "vocal" family, which becomes quite unbearable in the summer as they usually bring their arguments outside. I have not lived in the property long, so have only really noticed over the winter that when everything dies back we are also very overlooked by them.

There is high chain link fencing between us, which I would love to grow something evergreen up to deal with the privacy and also help with the noise.

Any ideas of something that we would also find quite pleasing to look at?

There are some beautiful variegated ivies available - fast-growing, thick and evergreen. Easy to cut back and you can use clippings to decorate the house at christmas, or donate to a local florist!
A Passion Flower (not expensive) would thrive on a fence and grows prolific, and is also an evergreen. Also it has amazing flowers and occasionally fruit.

How about weaving a repeat flowering climbing, or rambling rose through the ivy?
Pyracantha or Firethorn makes a lovely screen with white hawthorn like flowers in the spring and berries in the autumn. It is evergreen and hardy and a fairly fast grower. and also has nice thorns so people can't climb it. Keep it trimmed and it thickens up nicely. It also won't rely on your fence for support which can be an advantage.

clematis armandii evergreen a nd quite hardy the passion flower will lose its leaves in winter and prefers to be against a wall, chain link would be quite breeze. if the fence meets the wall of your house dont plant ivy you may be in the house long enough to regret it!!
