Its quite a big job to improve the aeration and drainage of a lawn involving adding large amounts of coarse sand to the top layer and getting it mixed in to improve the drainage and airflow
Moss is a result of many things cultural and the cultural problems need to be addressed:-
Close mowing (shaving). The moss then grows on the bare soil.
Shade. Moss thrives in shade so, remove the shade!
Damp, Moss thrives in wet areas, so improve the drainage!
Do NOT rake Moss until you have killed it with Iron, Fe 2 Lawn sand will do or liquid Iron and follow t'instructions on the packet. When it has gone black then rake it all out, top dress the area with a sandy soil and over seed with "Shady Place Grass Seed".
Spike the area with your fork and get the top dressing down the holes to improve drainage.
When you feed the lawn ALWAYS feed with a fert' that has "Iron added" Or "Feed Weed and Moss Killer"
But always try to remove the CAUSE!
