ive just knocked over a plant that died last year in a pot in the garden. it had a lot of stagnant water in the top of it so i tipped it over so the water could drain away and then i can get rid of the plant when its not all dripping wet. but the SMELL that is coming off it, well i just cant believe it. im sitting in the house, the plant is up the garden and i can smell it from here! it smells like a volcano (all rotten eggy and really strong and its made me gag a couple of times). is there any harmful stuff that could be in that smell?

No.

Had the same problem with a plant at work last summer. My boss was off sick for a few months and her plant was being watered by my colleage who didn't realise he was topping up stagnant water. The smell was revolting but my other colleague bought some compost, re-potted it and its doing fine now.
