when we did our lawn we put down all new topsoil presumably the roots need somewhere to dig into - we were told to keep the kids of for 3 weeks until it rooted.. and it was absolutely fine after that,....
There are a couple of ways to attack this project.
1.As you dig over the ground, reducing the bumps and filling the dents you could incorporate the sand and finally level everything together.
2. Dig over the ground as before, but grade through and consolidate. Then apply the sand and level and consolidate as you have done with the soil level.
Whichever way you do it the secret as with most jobs is in the preparation. When you lay the turf, use boards to walk on as you move forward as this helps to firm the turves.
Be prepared for a grass-cutting frenzy this season!!
I hope you don`t intend to use a roller to flatten the ground as you will end up with highs and lows, instead walk up and down with little steps pushing your heel into the soil and when you have finished, rake it level as poss and then do it again and rake yet again until you are satisfied it`s level. I bet you are saying, "You`re having a laugh", but if you want a lawn, you`ve got to put in the hard work first.
Agreed Carlton. Once prepared (and we would hit with roundup to clean the ground, strim off surplus vegetation and then rotavate and grade) I have my lads trampling away, much to the amusement of bystanders, a scattering of growmore, before a final rake to levels. But you just cant beat the old size 12's!!
