If they are hybrid Tea or Floribunda roses, the best thing you can do is dig them up and throw them away. If a hybrid rose starts a runner or shoot below the graft they will expend all of their energy on the wild rose runner and you'll never get flowers from them... Sorry...

how upsetting, I really wanted a rose garden and had bought all the nice smelling ones, back to the drawing board then, thanks clanad
Next time, cecil, buy Floribundas that are not hybrid. All Teas are hybrids. To tell the difference check near the bottom of the plant's stem for the tell-tale graft knob.

We've had some good luck with some of the more standard Teas... Peace is an all time international best seller... I have three and have had them for years. We live in the western U.S. and so have to winterize them... I'd expect you shouldn't have that problem if your temperatures don't get much below 25 degrees F.

Here's a link to Peace (sorry about the lengthey URL) http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://ger bera.org/image-files/gardener-2005-06-peace-ro se.jpg&imgrefurl=http://gerbera.org/gardening- magazine/the-gardener-index/june-2005/peace-ro se/&h=900&w=714&sz=96&tbnid=y_0zRySoJPb55M::&t bnh=146&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3DPeace%2Bro se&hl=en&usg=__HbVNyoLEjLKQsCztDb_LK--P6Po=&ei =ZWUDSpenN6WoM-OniaMD&sa=X&oi=image_result&res num=4&ct=image ...

Additionally, you'd like any of the Old English Roses. Anything by Rosarian David Austin are sure winners and the best smelling roses you can get. See here: http://www.olive-trees.net/rose%20section/engl ish_roses.htm ...

Best of luck!
