and am not sure how to get rid of them without it damaging the rose bud.? Have used green fly spray before that has stopped the buds from opening. Would anyone know of a brand I could use safely.

Try using one that contains natural fatty acids. I think Natures Answers are a brand that has this.
I always use washing-up liquid in a spray bottle,it works and dosen't do the buds any harm, good luck with the little blighters.
Sorry! I shall correct that, what I should have said was a bottle of water with a dash of washing-up liquid in.
This WORKS!!
Push a garlic clove into the soil next to the stem of the rose.
As the garlic grows the rose takes into it's system the garlic and aphids will not attack the leaves.
Medium to long term solution but it works. Meanwhile spray as above.

Or try a biological control method.
We use Nemaslug nematodes to kill our slugs, and you can get similar for aphids.

They are microscopic creatures you apply to the garden, usually in water. They will kill the aphids, without having any effect on the plants.

I advise a spray with the hose gun set on `wide`. followed with a spray of a well known systemic greenfly killer.
