What is this fungus?

We found a fungi in our British garden, underneath some ivy. They are about the size of a golfball , smooth skinned , but fairly hard. They are hazelnut in colour, with a slightly pointed end like a bulb has. When cut in half the inside is white glossy and softish, like hardening chewing gum. There is no particular smell. Any ideas what they could be please?

Sounds like Puff Balls, as they are hard in the centre in their early stages and change to spores as they develop and split to be blown around in the wind.

Thanks for that. I thought Puff Balls would be soft on the outside though and these were hard. Is that how they start out?
