how do i stop lower shoots from sprouting on a catoniaster. Can i pain tar over lower shoots?

Hi! i've just seen this post and i take it you mean Cotoneaster - you can't stop the lower shoots sprouting,as this it what it does.....but you can make it look nice by pruning the shoots you don't like right back to near the trunk.This way there are no tell-tale signs of cutting, This is a very hardy shrub,so you can do it just about anytime.
