Seem to have an invasion of ladybirds here in Essex!! whats going on.

Got them here too... mostly black ones with red spots...

These are a new breed that are invading our green and pleasant land and are killing our own ladybirds.

They're also round us in the Paris region. Quite big things too and looking for corners to hibernate in.
Oh yes, I saw the report on Autumn Watch the other night regarding the invasion of Harleguin Ladybirds so much so that they are having to monitor their whereabouts. Apparently, they are seeking refuge for the winter by swarming inside!!

Apart from the size, is there another way of telling the difference?
I seem to have quite a lot of different sizes, colours, number of spots, etc. in the garden.
