edging raisded border

Anyone any ideas on edging my curved raised border, previously done with log roll but now needs replacing, have thought of railway sleepers cut into chunks, but it is going to work out quite expensive, now hubby has been given some substantial planks of wood, but probably won't be enough so thought of incorporating an alternative material i.e bricks between each piece of wood. Any ideas as I'm not hot on imagination. Thanks all

Beware railway sleepers, they can ooze tar in hot weather. Cutting can be a problem as the timber can be horendously hard and even a chainsaw has touble, so check before you buy. However they make excellent retainers and placed upright you can form curves. I would go for 1/3 in the ground set in concrete and 2/3 out, with a membrane between soil and sleeper. I reckon you should look at around £25.00 each. A brick retaining wall needs to be a full brick width(210mm) and on a sound footing, otherwise it will crack, move and become an eyesore. Basic brick laying skills and knowhow will be required.

Your local scaffolding firm will let you have some old planks for around £3 - £5 depending on their condition.
