Please help me save my lovely plant!

Hello.
I have a Beaucarnea recurvata plant in my house. It was beautiful when I bought it and is supposed to be really easy to keep alive. I think I have killed it :o/
It's has gone all brown and most of it has fallen off. Where the bunches meet the tree bit it feels all wet and sqishy and they are just falling out in clumps. There is hardly any hair left on it now and what is there all looks to be dying off.
Is there anything I can do or is it a goner?
Thanks x

Can it get a fungal infection from just sitting in my house? I don't have any other plants.
I think the over watering may be a possibility. My bloke is always nagging cos I let it get dry and then proudly telling me that he's watered it for me.
So as all the leaves have dies does that mean it's dead then? Oh no :o(

I wouldn't give up all hope here -
If the soil is very wet then repot it into drier compost. Keep it in a fairly light/bright position and only water it sparingly (once every 2 weeks in the winter and one a week in the summer).
Once all the foliage that is going to die has fallen off it may start to re-sprout. These plants can be quite expensive so don't just chuck it away - give it some time to recover.
