Planting Grass indoors
I live in a flat and have no garden - my two little felines love eating grass. My brother sent me some Cat Grass seed and I need to plant it in a pot.
Do I have to put stones in the bottom of the pot? If I need something would anything else do in place of the stones?
Thanks
Susan

Hi Sue - the stones are just there to allow for drainage. If the soil is waterlogged and there is no drainage the grass could rot away. If the pot itself has drainage holes at the bottom then the stones or whatever medium you use should be big enough not to fall through the holes. If there are no drainage holes you can use any size medium - gravel, glass beads - even bits of broken crockery or terra cotta pots will do. I have seen cats on boats enjoying container-grown grass on deck!
You can grow cat grass on a sponge....just put the grains in the holes and keep moist in a dark place for a few days, when it has 'grown out' as cats like it fairly freh wash out the plantlets and reuse
Grow proper catnip in a pot of soil though....your kitties will love you for it... make sure you have the right one though....it is the variety Nepeta cataria the other 'catnips ' are just ornamental garden plants

A sponge - might try that.
The monster in my avatar is asthmatic and the last attack was caused by him getting cat nip all over his face (long story) so I want to avoid it.
Both Frankie and his sister Merlin love cat grass. I caught Frankie disembowelling a toilet roll earlier. Good job I love them.
