Japanes Anenomes

My Japanes anenomes are looking rather sad and small. Can anyone give advice on where they should be grown. Sun or shade and any soil type.

Hi Brinjal.I have pink and white versions of these all doing well. Ideally,they like a well drained but moisture retentive spot in full sun. They do tolerate some shade, clay and chalky soil and coastal exposure. I leave mine to die down then chop them off in early spring. You could try dividing them as long as you give them plenty of water. It is unusual for them to be small, if you divide, make sure each piece has got a good enough root system to survive. You could also check that nothing is eating the roots at the same time.

Thanks for that foxy. I think maybe they are in too much shade. I will move a couple and see how they do.

Mine do very well in a rich friable soil in a semi-shaded position.
