I have hacked this little sonso back to a stump so many times. It just seems to like it. It is partly under garden wall so I don't want to crowbar it by the roots cos it will bring the wall with it. Is there a way to poison it?

Go to your garden centre and get some "root out" follow the directions on the tin or ask for further advice from them.
Ive never tried it but I have been told driving something copper into it will do the trick.
Still another method is the salt method. This is particularly good for stump removal. Drill holes into either the base of the tree or roots, if exposed. Fill the holes with coarse salt, cover stump or base of tree with aluminum foil, and give it a week or two.

Thanks folks - oh I love a weekend dedicated to poisoning.
Don't do it Lilac is my favourite. It's worth it for the fragrance
My husband pruned mine and it killed it. I wanted it as I love lilac.
Cut down near ground.
Drill into each stump with large steel drill or average size spade bit.
Get yourself some SBK from local garden centre.
Fill each hole with SBK and cover the stump with foil or waterproof membrane.
Wait.
Why do you want to get the rid of it? Lilacs are so beautiful...
Unfortunately, the suckers multiply and grow so one has loads coming up/out everywhere, expand and pull down old walls.
Not as bad as Ivy roots .. but they do damage walls.
Thanks for that tip, ABags. :-)
No worries ..
If you have old ivy growing through/into an old stone wall .. use this to kill it. Eventually, it will all die back and the ivy can be pulled off.
