Blocking Up Chimney

We have a gas fire which is never used, we have the radiators on but never the gas fire. We thought we might board up the chimney to stop some of the draught we get and keep the heat in a bit. I take it that it would be OK to do this as long as obviously we never put the fire on?

Do you mean to brick up the fireplace or just block the chimney, I would suggest removing the fire and closing over the fireplace aperture but you will need to leave a vent or you may get damp problems on the chimney breast.

We can't remove the fire as it's rented property, maybe we had best not do it if it may cause damp problems. We were going to just block it with a piece of board. Thanks Ratter15
