You might get a cash in hand, no questions asked, gauranteed till he walks off you're premises builder who a mate knows down you're local pub for �60 per day. That is only �7.50ph or �300pw most company or self employed builder's could not afford to work for that and it would not cover their outgoings. What with insurance's, vechicle's, Plant, tools, materials, Admin costs, Accountant fees, never-ending updating of skills and technology training and qualification update coarse's, derv, professional body charges, advertising, phone costs,Hire charges expendables etc...etc...etc...and then wanting a decent days wage after all that and countless other things I have not even touched upon, I would realisticaly be preparing to pay arond �15-�20ph for a good reputable general builder, one who can satisfy building control and self certify aswell with lengthy insurance backed gaurantees and good reference's.
It would be interesting to hear buildersmates or Raysparks comments on this thread or am I and my builder friends rip off merchants ???

Thanks to you all, I was just trying to get a feel for a decent but not extortionate rate, my mate is a builder and he's ok but not great and a bit lax on standards when it comes to mates, however, he still expects �85 per 6 hr day....all in hand aswell....ahem. I think I've found my answers chaps and I'm getting Steve the DIY man in for sure!

I am a self emplyed electrician in North Wales and I would not work for 65-80 per day, I charge �15 per hour, my insurances,test equipment and belonging to trade associatyons, registering jobs etc cost me �1,500 last year that is without van insurance & upkeep, I would want at least �100 per day

�90 a day yes they expect a good job for that, but this is not no where near the responsibilty or the overheads that a builder /plumber or a elec has ,i cant flood the house, i cant set fire to the house, and i cant gas you. THINK ABOUT

I am actually more of a buyer of building services than a seller. Rates in this part of the South (but not inside the M25 ring) for decent self-employed tradespeople, paying their taxes, vary from �100 per day to over �200pd. At the top of the tree are the plumbers. Brickies work out at about �140 (but price themselves in gangs of 2 plus 1 labourer, of course). Labourers can be found for �80pd or less.

But what is a General Builder? - usually a guy with a core trade (often chippie or brickie, since these are required on most jobs) who organises a team of others, often his mates when he starts out, to deliver small-scale solutions to householders building needs. So it really depends what skill you need.

Yeah I'd get the real Mc Coy in for plumbing and gas but a good DIYer for tiling and plastering me thinks. Cheers once again and this has proved to be an incredibly informative debate.

being a general builder myself - my charges vary depending on the type of work i undertake. As a rule i charge �120 per day for labour costs but realistic customers understand that running a business is not all about making a living wage. i would not pro rota �120 if a job took me 1 hour but had to travel 20 miles there and back down the coast. Im simply saying that there is no true fixed amount to charge - my �daily rate is a guide for myself - i sometimes earn more than this per day i sometimes earn less. Like it has already been pointed out - there are many other overheads that have to be taken into account. advertising, van, phone, tools upkeep, insurance, trade body membership, tax, pension, etc etc etc. it is not unreasonable to put a profit on top of a daily rate to keep the business healthy. My charge of �120 a day in the blackpool area is by and large very reasonable when you exclude the black ecomony. I tend not to discuss my daily rate with customers but rather quote for the job in hand - the customer either says yes or no. i could spend hours telling you about work that i have had to put right after the customer used the guy down the pub who works for �60 a day but i think its safe to say - you get what you pay for.

im a builder in the manchester area,i wouldnt work for less than150 per day,i get my work through word or mouth.the polish????forget it you pay peanuts you get monkeys! i take pride in my work it speaks volumes
