Fireplace.

Hello, We have a quarry stone fireplace which I wanted as we have timber beams ( Cottage like). Thing is, Im bored with the greyness of the slate and would like to lighten it. Does anyone know if can be painted? It's also been varnished clear. Any replies welcome.
