Ahhhhh no no no!!!! crikey!!! you need a leather cleaner and leather feed!!!!
You can ask in any good furniture store what bthey would recommend, or go for something like this:
http://www.furnitureclinic.co.uk/LeatherCare.h tm

remember you have to not only clean the leather, but make sure the leather is fed to keep it supple and soft
I was told by a leather upholsterer that baby wipes are just as good, I use them anyway and they work ok
baby wipes! even Tesco's own brand are good on leather
I used a very weak solution of Pledge Soapy Wood Cleaner and my suite came up a treat.

Have previously tried saddle soap and found it an awful palaver with no particularly better result.
Question Author
do the baby wipes regarly but will try the pledge soap.
thanks
Ikea do a leather cleaning set that my colleague (very house proud) swears by. I have dark red leather sofas that have never needed a clean. They are in our "good" room and don't get that much use. The kids never go in there! So, I can't give a personal recommendation.

ive plenty of ideas. thanks

Can any products remove the smell of tobacco from a leather sofa?
You need to use a good quality water based foam leather cleaner.
DO NOT use anything containing oils, waxes or silicones. (Most 'conditioners' contain waxes or oils) and furniture polish (pledge) contains silicones which will eventually destroy the finish on the leather.
BABY WIPES are the worst thing you can use as they will destroy the finish on your leather.

Saddle soap should never be usd on upholstery leather or garments it is meant for saddles which are very different from todays finished leathers.

A lot of leather wipes contain chemicals which will also destroy the finish or leave residues on the leather which will damage it.
Fairy liquid contains more salt these days to get dishes clean and this will break the finish down on your leather. This has been verified by the manufacturers (as with the baby wipes).

Magic Erasers should not be used unless you are going to renew the finish on you r leather. We have tested these recently and they sand away the top finish on the leather.

You should also follow cleaning with a good water based leather protector which will act like a 'scotchgard' and inhibit dirt and stains from being absorbed and make cleaning easier the next time. Conditioners are totally unnecessary and only a product push by manufacturers.

It is important to maintain a regular cleaning regime cleaning dirt off the surface regularly and inhibiting the absorption of body oils into the leather with a protector is the best way of doing this. The only 'moisturizer' a leather needs is from water.

i hate how it is difficult to get the smell of tobacco off a leather seat.its like the two get tied in a knot.

There is no such thing as a good homemade leather cleaner as all the leather cleaners that work are highly tested to do the job they do.
Ink is difficult and if you have an absorbent leather then it will not clean out no matter what you use.
A good cheap leather maintenance product that works is called Lazy Leather which is a cleaner and protector in one and is great for handbags. It comes in a 50ml bottle so is cheap to buy and easy to use.

If you're uneasy about cleaning your leather furniture with soap and water, look into leather cleaner instead. A water-based foam leather cleaner will be best and should be inexpensive. Never use furniture polish or anything containing oils, waxes or silicones on your leather furniture..
