Right, got to get down to some real cleaning over the next few days ready for OH surprise 60th birthday party. We` re having a few friends and family over the weekend. After Ive had a good clean I want to be able to get the house smelling really nice and wondered what anyone could recommend to give a really nice aroma around the house. Dont want any of those plug in things or sprays but something a bit more natural but not overpowering. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance

In my opinion nothing beats opening all the doors and windows possible and get the fresh air in.

You can also boil cinnamon and cloves or even bake bread on the day if the mood hits you. I so agree that the bottled scents are a bit over powering and not as nice as the real thing.

Good luck.
You might try a scented candle...Yankee are pretty good, more overpowering in the jar than they are when burnt...waft the lid under your nose to get an idea of what it will be like. If the sky is the limit try Jurlique, Jo Malone or Molton Brown.

Thanks both.
woofgang - I like the idea of candles. I think we have a candle shop in our small town. I`ll pop and have a whiff.
xstitcher- I have windows and doors open whenever I can as I`m a fresh air freak. The smell of bread seems nice. Not keen on cinnamon and cloves. Tried it once at Christmas and didn`t really like the smell. But thanks anyway.
I use oil burner oil in an empty AmbiPur plugin.
Works fantastically well!
Yankee Candles do lovely tarts for your burner, they smell delicous! not expensive, just us in your oil burner!........Lovely aroma all through the house!............
Tarts? .. or farts? : )
Tarts?

Fresh brewed coffee and baked scones smell nice.
I never understand why they are called Tarts, what's the matter with tea-lights?!
.. or Gran's baking, eh?!
New one on me .. I thought was a typo!
I'm using Air Wick Aqua Mist- the one I have is Freesia and Jasmine, smells lovely and the bottle has lasted me months!
Tarts! you put them in the top of your oil burner, with a lighted tea light at the bottom to melt the tart, the aroma is lovely and lasts for about 6 - 8 hours! they cost less than £1..........................Bargain!........
...............
I put lemon and lime peel in a glass bowl with about a pint of water and 'cook ' in the microwave for 30 mins...opening the door every 5 mins or so to let the steam waft out...Also used scented candles sparingly and put a few drops of essential oil on the bulbs in my table lamps when the bulb gets warm the smell spreads around the room. In the summer I use citrus scents in Autumn /winter something more woody and at christmas... fir

Thanks for all your answers. I went to Yankee candle shop. Lots of lovely smells. I chose a little thing (tart ?) called `early sunrise` really fresh smelling and only £1.05. I think I had chucked out my oil burner years ago as it was getting a bit yukkie, but I bought one for £1 in a nearby shop.
Im going to try this today as a sampler and if its nice I will buy the bigger version for the weekend.
oh you will be hooked...I have a fragrance wardrobe for right around the year now... If you like YC then the Yankee Doodle website is the cheapest place to get them in the UK
I really like those reed diffusers where you stick some twig-looking things in a glass jar of scented oil - very delicate smell :)
