I changed gas and electricity suppliers sometime back end of last year beginning of this year. I seemed to end up having 3 company's supply me all at once. Is this possible? Is this legal??

It's a minefield I don't fully understand but I too am experiencing this to the point where a debt collector has been put on me.
We moved in January and I immediately signed up to BG for both gas and electric, supplied meter readings and everything required, and according to BG they were responsible for supplying both from early February. In May though I got a bill from Eon for part of the period I was supposed to be with BG, so I queried what was going on and didn't pay, wanting an explanation and a breakdown from them. I never heard from Eon again and as said, they passed this on as a debt.
