Free cavity wall insulation for the over 70s

A friend of mine (well into his 70s) wanted to have free cavity wall insulation, but was told by the 'surveyor' that because his house was over a particular square meterage they would need to make a partpayment of £150.00. I know that these days nothing comes for free, but is this right? Are there conditions to this 'government based offer'? What do I tell him - tough, pay up or you don't get, or indeed, go somewhere else?

British Gas run a similar scheme.
There is a limit on the amount of square metres for 'free' and it depends upon the type of house your neighbour has......has a proper calculation been done about the additional area and its cost, or is that a 'ball-park' figure?

The Age Concern website has a link, which is called Warm Front Grant, and this is possibly where information may be obtained about the cavity wall insulation. My elderly aunt had new central heating installed which was paid for by a Warm Front grant.

My grandparents waited ages (winter) for the warm front grant (told about it by next door) so they (stupidly) paid whole £2,500 and got visit from WFG 3 days later-they had free wall installation instead, but were put in Nursing home by SS 3 months later-house sold-what a waste.....

You also need to be careful about cavity wall insulation. It's not suitable for all houses. I seem to remember that if the house is very exposed, then yes, it can help. In a lot of other cases people were wasting their time/money.

I don't think it will get any better.
Take it before they remove the subsidy altogether!
